Firefighter of the Year: Ashley Carter
Ashley Carter has been with the Fire District since 2021. Before working for the Fire District, she was a Division 1 Collegiate Softball Coach. Fire Engineer Carter has been involved many programs including Honor Guard, Fire Explorers, Rancho Cucamonga Firefighters’ Association – IAFF Local 2274 social media, and Academy Instructor. Carter attended Cal State Fullerton, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She also attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a master’s degree in business. Carter enjoys snowboarding, traveling, and coaching softball during her days off.
Non-Sworn Employee of the Year: Mackenzie Rojer
Mackenzie has been with the Fire District since July 2024. She came to the Fire District from the Claremont Colleges – Pomona College, where she held a data analyst position. She graduated from California Baptist University with a master’s in business administration, specializing in business analytics and management. In Mackenzie’s role as the Fire District’s first Data Analyst, she tells the story of the Fire District through data and drives data-driven decisions in the Fire District. In her free time, Mackenzie enjoys reading, golfing, and practicing yoga to stay balanced and focused.
Team Citation Award:Â Training and EMS Division
The Training and EMS Division of the Fire District plays a critical role in advancing public safety through high-quality emergency medical services, comprehensive firefighter training, and strong regional partnerships. This division’s dedication, professionalism, and forward-thinking approach continue to enhance the safety and well-being of the Rancho Cucamonga community.
Volunteer of the Year: Fred Comeau
Fred Comeau has been volunteering his time to the Rancho Cucamonga Firefighters’ Pipes and Drums band since 2015. His commitment to our department has resulted in countless hours of his personal time playing in important events like Badge Pinning Ceremonies, firefighter funerals, State of the City, and 9/11 Remembrance Ceremonies. The band is a massive part of the Fire District’s culture, and we are immensely grateful that he chooses to spend his free time playing in the band. While Fred is not rocking the base drums for the Fire District, he also plays in three other bands, volunteers for the La Verne Heritage Foundation, and spends time with his grandkids and grand-pups. Fun fact, Fred Comeau is the father of our Deputy Fire Chief Chad Comeau!

Explorer of the Year: Lily Perrette
Lily joined the Fire Explorer post in 2022, during her time as a fire explorer she has demonstrated an exception work ethic and dedication to giving back to the organization through volunteering her time at programs like Jr. Firefighter Camp and Open House. She is committed to honing her firefighting skills and hoping to one day become a full-time firefighter. Outside of the Fire District Lily works at In-N-Out Burger, going to hockey games and being outside off roading or camping.
Deputy of the Year: Deputy Matthew Habell
Deputy Matthew Habell has served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department since 2013, beginning at West Valley Detention Center before transferring to the Rancho Cucamonga Station in 2017. He has worked patrol and now serves in the traffic division, where he has completed advanced training through collision reconstruction. A MADD Award recipient, he also serves on the county’s Major Accident Investigation Team. As a Field Training Officer, Deputy Habell mentors new deputies, shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals. His leadership, initiative, and commitment to excellence make him a standout and a deserving Deputy of the Year.
Professional Staff of the Year: Loren Mendoza
Loren Mendoza has served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department since 2017, advancing through multiple divisions before joining the Rancho Cucamonga Station in 2019. As an Office Specialist at the Public Safety Facility, she manages Uniform Crime Reporting, ensuring accurate, timely data submission to the Department of Justice. Loren also serves as a key liaison between headquarters, station personnel, and city staff. Known for her organization, attention to detail, and professionalism, she consistently delivers excellent service to both the public and department members. Her proactive approach and commitment to continuous growth make her an essential part of station operations.
Sheriff’s Service Specialist of the Year: Natalie Reyes
Natalie Reyes brings over a decade of public safety experience, serving with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department since 2015. She began at West Valley Detention Center and later advanced to the Scientific Investigation Division, specializing in evidence processing with exceptional precision. Now assigned to the Rancho Cucamonga Station, she supports patrol operations and responds to calls for service. Natalie is trained in fingerprint and DNA processing and plays a key role in mentoring fellow staff. Actively engaged in community events, she strengthens public trust through service and professionalism. Her reliability, expertise, and dedication make her an invaluable asset to the department.
Reserve Deputy of the Year: Oshin Karami
Reserve Deputy Oshin Karami has served the Rancho Cucamonga Station since 2014, contributing across patrol, gang enforcement, DUI operations, and community events. Averaging nearly 800 volunteer hours annually, his dedication is unmatched. Over the past six years, he has served as Unit Commander, providing leadership, coordinating operations, and ensuring effective and safe execution of enforcement efforts. Deputy Karami is also deeply involved in community outreach, including Shop with a Cop and local events that build trust and connection. His strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to service make him a vital asset to both the department and the community.
Volunteer of the Year:Â Daryl Van Dran
Daryl Van Dran has been a dedicated Citizen on Patrol volunteer since 2014, contributing over 2,400 service hours. A leader within the program, he has served as Squad Leader, Field Training Officer, Vice Commander, and Commander, mentoring volunteers and overseeing operations. Daryl also leads the county’s only COP Bike Patrol Team, expanding coverage to areas not easily reached by vehicles. His efforts have directly contributed to critical incidents, including locating a missing adult. Known for his positive spirit and community engagement, he regularly participates in city events and serves as a trusted ambassador for the department.
Humane Hero Award: Dale Gose
Dale Gose has served as a Registered Veterinary Technician at the City’s Animal Center for 20 years. She provides medical care for sick and injured animals, including exams, treatments, diagnostics, and emergency response. She also leads a high-volume surgery team completing more than 25 procedures daily and has expanded her expertise to include dental radiography, extractions, and plasma transfusions.
A dedicated team player, Ms. Gose supports colleagues during staffing shortages and mentors new staff with patience and expertise. Outside of work, she enjoys time with her husband and three children, home renovation projects, and outdoor activities. She is proud to serve her community and honored by this recognition.
Humane Hero Award: Mariana Perez-Aguirre
Mariana Perez-Aguirre, a Long Beach native, has built her life on responsibility, resilience, and service. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration with a minor in Sociology, providing a strong foundation in law enforcement and community relations.
As an Animal Service Officer II with the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Center, she responds to cases of animal cruelty and neglect, enforces public safety ordinances, and provides community education. Outside of work, she enjoys marathon running, hiking, and creative pursuits, while finding balance through quiet time at the beach. She is proud to serve her community and honored by this recognition.
Humane Hero Award: Monica Schusse
Monica Schusse is a long-time Inland Empire resident and has called Rancho Cucamonga home for 18 years. After retiring from nearly 30 years of public service in 2017, she began volunteering at the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care Center.
Her lifelong love of animals and experience caring for a variety of pets led her to this meaningful role, where she applies her professional skills while connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. Volunteering has allowed her to witness countless animals find loving homes, an experience she considers a true blessing. In her free time, she enjoys travel, outdoor activities, and family outings. She is honored to receive this recognition.
